About SAMBA

The Purpose of SAMBA is to operate, and analyze data from a low-latitude meridional array of magnetometers along the coast of Chile and Antarctica. The array will be known as SAMBA (South American Meridional B-field Array) and will include 11 magnetometer sites approximately along the 0° geomagnetic longitude and ranging from -5° to -48° geomagnetic latitude. For a map of all magnotmeter locations click here.

Combining SAMBA with the MEASURE, MACCS, and AGO stations will create an almost complete, cusp-to-cusp-long meridional chain at approximately 0° magnetic meridian, which will be located 12 hours of local time from the 210° chain. Each one of these two long meridional chains by itself provides an excellent tool for studying the latitudinal propagation characteristics and variations of pulsations, and can therefore track the transfer of energy from the solar wind to the inner magnetosphere at one local time. Combined together they will offer an unprecedented opportunity for the global study of the energy transfer and its modes. For example noon-midnight, dawn-dusk, and conjugate studies at all latitudes will be possible for the first time.
