Decemeber 2009- Dr. James Weygand and Lt. Nathan Sterner will be traveling to WAIS-D, Antarctica to re-install the magnetometer. Stay tuned for updates...
January 2009- Lt Nathan Sterner along with Dr. Enrique Cordaro, Dr. Veronica Vallejos, and Eduardo Cerda visited the Escudero station on King George Island, Antarctica. Here the old magnetometer was replaced with a newer real-time system. Engineers Jorge Osorio and Fernando Llanquin provided on-site support. Novemeber 2008- Dr. Eftyhia Zesta and Lt. Nathan Sterner from Air Force Research Lab joined Dr. Thanasis Boudouridis and Kathryn Rowe from UCLA and Dr. Marina Stepanova from Universidad de Santiago de Chile for a month long trip to Chile. The following stations were visitied...
Los Cerrillos- The first stop on the visit was at Dr. Enrique's Cordaro research site for the Universidad de Chile. The site also houses his Cosmic Rays Research with student Eduardo Cerda. At this site, we replaced the old magnetometer with a new real-time system.
Punta Arenas- In Punta Arenas, we upgraded the computer at the Universidad de Magallanes ran by Dr. Ricardo Monreal.
Puerto Natales- Here we replaced the magnetometer that was struck by lightning with a new calibrated one.
Valdivia- This magnetomer was moved to the new Universidad Austral de Chile site ran by Dr. Christian Lazo Ramirez and Dr. Jorge Arenas. The old sensor was working perfectly and only needed a better computer.
Osorno- this station is managed by Dr. David Martinez at the Universidad de Los Lagos. Similar to Los Cerrillos, we installed a new real time system.
La Serena- the final stop was at La Serena. We met with Dr. Pedro Vega and replaced the computer at the site.
Overall, a very successful trip to perform routine maintenance and upgrades for the SAMBA chain! To see additional installation pictures, please view Nathan's blog.
Janurary 2008- Dr. David Galvan visited WAIS-D, Antarctica to perform maintenance on the instrument. To see the chilly site up close click here!
December 2005- Dr. Mark Moldwin and Dr. James Weygand traveled to WAIS-D to install our only auroral magnetometer. The system was designed by Engineer Steve Musko.
April 2005- Kathryn Rowe from UCLA went to Palmer station with the U.S. Antarctica Program. After battling the high seas on the cruise from South America, she successfully installed a real time magnetometer. For additional information, check out her work blog! |
